Because it is handled intelligently - because it expresses a deal of depth and feeling, this shapes up as interesting entertainment. It is a story of incompatibility between a husband and wife whose daughter refuses to take sides. A young man advises her that parents are people - that they can be brought together by giving them a mutual worry. So the girl effects a reconciliation by flirting with scandal and disgrace. It's a simple story, well emphasized with human interest. Betty Bronson of "Peter Pan" fame plays the daughter with charm and authority, while Adolphe Menjou and Florence Vidor score as the parents. A good number. An intelligent and interesting domestic story told with taste and a good measure of charm is this adaptation of an Alice Duer Miller story. Here is the triangle of a married couple on the verge of divorce and their grown-up boarding school daughter. The twentieth century child takes things in her own hands and brings her father and mother together. "Are Parents People?" is delightfully acted by a nearly perfect cast. Florence Vidor gives a sincere portrayal of the wife, while Adolphe Menjou's characterization of the husband is finely shaded. Excellent as are these two performances, it seems to me that Betty Bronson is even better as the daughter. Her Lita Hazlitt proves that she can do more than be Peter Pan. The superb spirit of youth is here, plus a growing surety of acting. Her playing, in fact, is genuinely charming. And there is a highly promising young actor, Lawrence Grey, in a smaller role. You will hear more of Mr. Grey before long. "Are Parents People?" brings forward a new director, Mal St. Clair, at least new to screen drama. St. Clair has been making slapstick comedies for years. Farce seems to be the perfect college of the screen. Everybody has been anxiously awaiting the release of this picture for two reasons: first, to see if Betty Bronson would measure up to her performance in "Peter Pan"; second, because this is the first production that the youthful director Mal St. Clair has done for Paramount. We could write pages and pages about Betty, but it can be summed up in this: she is a marvelous actress, natural and human at all times. The story shows a young girl whose parents suffer from incompatibility. She decides to give them a mutual worry to bring them together. Every member of the cast is perfect - Adolphe Menjou, Florence Vidor, Lawrence Gray and Andre DeBerganger. BUT what is foremost is the direction. Betty Bronson's appearance in ARE PARENTS PEOPLE? marked her first film after her career-making appearance as PETER PAN, and indeed the role called for much of the same charm and sense of mischief, albeit in feminine attire. Lita Hazlitt is sent away to boarding school when she refuses to live with either one of her feuding parents. It seems that Mr. and Mrs. Hazlitt have decided that they are incompatible and plan to divorce. She does not find this situation acceptable, and decides that the best hope of bringing them back together is to give the something more to worry about than the petty diغير مجاز مي باشدreements and annoyances that have driven them apart. Her first ploy is to get expelled from school by accepting the blame for a rabid fan letter sent to a popular movie star by one of her friends. She then proceeds to find the star on location, where her parents, now alerted to the potential disaster, have arrived to avert it. When the star turns out to be a crashing bore and monumental egotist, Lita determines that more drastic measures are called for and decides to disappear! The Photoplay reviewer waxed enthusiastic: "Everybody has been anxiously awaiting the release of this picture for two reasons: first, to see if Betty Bronson would measure up to her performance in PETER PAN; second, because this is the first production that the youthful director, Mal St. Clair, has done for Paramount. The New York Times had special praise for the work of André Beranger as Lita's movie-star target, citing his "amusing and interesting performance," but also had praise for others including "Florence Vidor [who] is capital as Mrs. Hazlitt, especially when she is listening [to] and watching the tedious Mansfield." William K. Everson, in his American Silent Film, cited PARENTS' opening sequence which "starts with an important establishing sequence telling us that a middle-aged couple is rich, sophisticated, and divorcing, but still basically very much in love. All of this information is conveyed visually, and it is not until the plot is well under way - some five minutes into the film - that we get the first title." Of Bronson, though, Everson believed that "The real tragedy of [her] career is that she arrived on the screen just a few years too late. PETER PAN should have been the zenith of one phase of her career, not the beginning of it. Had she arrived on the scene just ten years earlier, in that age of innocence when honest sentiment, whimsy, fantasy and Cinderella themes were not deemed old-fashioned and out of touch with the times, what a star she could have become." Starring Pauline Starke, David Butler and Harold Goodwin If one were to judge this melodrama by whether it adheres to logic or not, one would have to condemn it on the grounds that it offends logic almost in every situation. But there is so much thrilling action in it that picture-goers who are not critical about logic will enjoy it to their heart's content. There is good human interest in it, too -- enough to satisfy almost everybody. The picture deals with how the hero, a railroad mail clerk, becomes acquainted with the heroine, and how he helps her save her brother from the gallows by rushing information of the young man's innocence to the governor in time to save the young man's life. The hero marries, of course, the heroine. There are several good fights between the hero and a gang of crooks on a train, at one time part of the train being run away. ادامه مطلب

Apparently Quentin Tarantino and I both credit this as our very first movie; I saw it on TV when I was about seven and it changed my life. It's ridiculous, of course, but the combination of classic monsters, dizzy sets and some of Bud and Lou's funniest bits make it a keeper. Dracula (Bela Lugosi) concocts an evil plan to resurrect the Frankenstein Monster (Glenn Strange) and take over the world. But Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) teams up with baggage handlers Chick Young (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur Grey (Lou غير مجاز مي باشدtello) to stop them. Frank Ferguson is very funny as the blustery, easily perturbed Mr. McDougal, who runs the "house of horrors" and is responsible for the whole mess. Lenore Aubert and Jane Randolph play the beautiful women who are both after Wilbur, for different reasons. The plot stretches once or twice, zipping through the course of a day, so that Talbot can turn into the Wolf Man again. The effects, including Dracula transforming into a cartoon bat, are actually kind of quaint, and I love that animated title sequence. It's too bad Boris Karloff couldn't play the monster; watching Strange here really proves what a great actor Karloff was, but Vincent Price turns up in a cameo to make up for it. Interestingly, this was only the second and final time Lugosi played Dracula, and he played a legitimate vampire only three times (including The Return of the Vampire, made at Columbia Pictures in 1944). Many horror fans credit the success of this comedy with the death of the Universal monster movie cycle. A reasonably-priced two-disc DVD set with Frankenstein and seven (!) other A&C movies is now out of print. In 2012, Universal released a new Blu-ray/DVD combo set in conjunction with the studio's 100th anniversary. Lon Chaney 1921 Released September 17, 1921. Lon Chaney (as Farrallone) and Leatrice Joy (as Lilith) are both members of a secret political society of revolutionaries intending to make the world better through assassinations and bombings. Actor John Bowers is Forrest, a man younger than Farralone but sharing the same affection for the ideologically pure Lilith, a woman wholeheartedly dedicated to the cause with no time for love from either man. The secret group also includes a number of other gentlemen, all meeting surreptitiously in order to plan their targeted killings determined by drawing cards from a deck (incidentally, as the film starts with the lettered titles announcing the stars and director, only a single playing card without lettering is shown to title this film, that card is of course the ace of hearts.) When Forrest is selected (by the ace of hearts drawn from a deck) to carry out a dangerous assassination of a businessman, Lilith begins to have doubts about her vow of chastity to the cause, and proposes marriage to Forrest as a way to reward and to bolster his courage to carry out the killing (he will be delivering a bomb to the eating establishment the target frequents). Chaney's character Farrallone looks on at this change in Lilith with anguish as he has been nursing a secret love for her in silence. His affection is soon threatened with a greater problem when he realizes that Lilith and Bowers have actually fallen in love and are starting to renege on the suicidal bomb plot to further the aims of their political cause, and if there's anything their political party loathes, it is reneging, and any member who does so must be eliminated. As with many other Lon Chaney films (Tell it to the Marines, Laugh Clown Laugh, He Who Gets Slapped), Farrallone will be put to the test to sacrifice what he wants most for the benefit of who he loves best. ادامه مطلب

Starring George Walsh If you like your pictures hot, you'll want to see George Walsh in his latest, "American Pluck," for he not only keeps you on the griddle as to what will happen next, but his name is Blaze Derringer. Blaze is kicked out of college, and his irate parent tells him to clear out and not come back until he has earned five thousand dollars. What do you suppose Blaze does? Puts on his gloves and passes the hat . . . Well, you are half right. He puts on his gloves . . . and goes in for a prize fight. Blaze meets a girl, and she put him on fire in a minute. It's a complicated job winning the real girl, but when she happens to be a Princess, there's more red tape than ever. The Princess rules far away Bargonia. With the map of the world always changing in these days, like the waist-lines, there's no telling where this strange land is. The subtitle informs us that the people were a banana-loving race, but they had been fed up on "apple-sauce." I suppose that mkes us a ham sandwich nation until someone came along and set the hot dog on us! But Blaze trails the Princess right to her throne, saves her from a scheming statesman, sees her crowned Queen, and in fact, is a regular self-starting Yankee son-of-a-gun, and you'll like him. If you still believe in fairy tales, perhaps you can down this -- if not, you're out of luck. List to this -- a princess meets a college boy posing as a prize fighter and falls in love with him. But what cares she for the silk and satin counts, dukes, etc. This is the twentieth century, and she'll marry the man of her heart. And she does. Now we ask you -- can you beat that? ادامه مطلب

Robert Redford - 1975 Robert Redford stars in 3 Days of Condor - a movie with a classic case of 1970s paranoia about a government with too many secrets, and the functionaries within intelligence agencies who follow orders too readily (and farm-out hit man work to killer tradesmen, played with ironic and humorous panache by Max Von Sydow). Redford is a low-level CIA analyst named Joe Turner who routinely reads foreign magazines and books, writes reports on the contents, and generally pursues a mundane office jockey existence at the "American Literary Historical Society" (which is the CIA cover office in New York City). One rainy day he sneaks out of the well-protected brownstone building to pick up some lunch. When he returns, he discovers the entire building has been massacred by a group of unknown gunmen. Turner (Redford) flees for his life. He calls up the main CIA office in Washington, DC that oversees the ALHS, and asks what to do. The leader there (Cliff Robertson) arranges a meeting so that the frightened Joe Turner can be brought into safety at a secure CIA facility, but at the meeting another gunman appears and with bullets flying, Turner runs for his life again. Redford's Joe Turner is confused by all the killing, not realizing it was one of his routine analyst reports on an obscure publication that brought out all the secret killers in (and out) of the CIA. As he scrambles through layers of CIA bureaucracy trying to find which side he is on, he discovers he may not actually have one. ادامه مطلب
